Need a ChatGPT Alternative? 12 AI Chatbots to Try for Free

Need A Chatgpt Alternative Featured

ChatGPT works well enough, but it’s not the only AI chatbot around. Try out these ChatGPT alternatives to see how other excel in different areas. Plus, you might come across some alternatives that perform better than ChatGPT.

What to Look for in a ChatGPT Alternative

Yes, ChatGPT is the most well-known AI chatbot. It’s popular and does a great job at general queries and even some deep research. Yet, that popularity also means more users and slower responses. Other AI chatbots often work better for research, coding, translation, writing, and image generation. And, if you’re like me, you’ve run into quite a few ChatGPT hallucinations or completely outdated information.

When comparing chatbots, consider the following:

  • Accurate, relevant responses
  • Easy to use and understand
  • Multilingual support
  • Reasonable pricing for premium tiers
  • No bias
  • Outperforms ChatGPT using the same prompts

Even if you love ChatGPT, I recommend having a few other AI chatbots as backups. When you bump up against ChatGPT’s free limits, use an alternative’s free plan to avoid costly monthly subscriptions.

1. Gemini

Gemini is Google’s ChatGPT alternative, using its own in-house AI model. It’s designed for general research queries, creating content, learning new things, and even translating content. All you need is a Google account.

Multiple models are available for different types of queries. Of course, you can also create detailed images. The free version is fairly limited in comparison with many other options. The real advantage is native integration with other Google products.

2. Copilot

Copilot by Microsoft is built into Windows and Edge, though you can remove it. Create content, get summarized search results with reference links, and even create AI images. With Copilot, you also get free access to some premium ChatGPT models, along with other internal models.

I personally like the ease of switching between conversation styles, along with offering follow-up questions you might want to ask. Tackle everything from vacation planning to crafting documents in Word. Full integration with Office does require a subscription. Yes, it does work for coding, but Tabnine could be better for game development.

3. Perplexity AI

Perplexity AI feels more like a research search engine. If you need more factual answers with citations, it’s one of the more reliable ChatGPT alternatives. It also uses multiple AI models from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and more.

Ask questions, comparison shop, plan vacations, and more. Discover trending content and start research-based conversations directly in the chat. Create spaces to better organize your content. It’ll even work within WhatsApp and has its own browser.

4. Poe

Poe, Platform for Open Exploration, is a Quora creation. Unlike most of the ChatGPT alternatives on this list, Poe isn’t just one tool. It’s a variety of chatbots and AI models, such as GPT-4, Perplexity, DeepSeek, o3-mini, DALL-E-3, and more. Many features are free, but others require a subscription.

Poe’s a great option for testing different chatbots in one place, with no need to create dozens of accounts on multiple platforms. One of my favorite features is creating your own bots. If you need inspiration, just browse bots created by other Poe users. If you want to try even more premium models for free, try Yupp.

5. Qwen

Qwen is China’s open source alternative to ChatGPT. The major downside is there is some censorship based on China’s politics. Otherwise, it offers some of the same deep research features for free as ChatGPT’s premium models. It also does a better job at image editing.

The one thing I found is sometimes answers are slower, but they’re more detailed with less fluff than ChatGPT. It even features a web page generation chatbot to quickly develop your own sites.

6. Claude

While Claude works well with general queries, its reasoning abilities surpass ChatGPT. It works best for analyzing text and code. It also performs better at languages other than English. ChatGPT is multilingual, but still has numerous errors in non-English languages.

You won’t find image generation, but it could be your favorite coding companion. It also integrates well into Slack, Chrome, and Excel. Think of it as a more professional chatbot than ChatGPT.

7. Mistral Le Chat

Mistral Le Chat was created for European users, making it multilingual from the ground up. What I love most is the concise answers versus the more conversational style of ChatGPT. Overall, it performs just as well as ChatGPT for most queries, including deep research and document analysis.

Chatgpt Alternatives Mistral Le Chat

The key standout for me among other ChatGPT alternatives is Le Chat puts privacy first. Your chats aren’t used to train AI, your data’s deleted after each session unless you choose to keep it, and communications are encrypted.

8. Character.AI

If you just want to have fun AI conversations, Character.AI is the perfect ChatGPT alternative. Every character has their own “personality” or niche. Chat about games, books, movies, your life, etc. Play games, learn a language, or even write a poem. It’s all for fun, so don’t take responses too seriously here.

Viewing characters on Character.ai

I like that there are always new characters to chat with. Or, if you can’t find the perfect character, create your own and share it with others. While it’s free to use the platform, premium gives you faster messaging, customized chat rooms, and other perks.

9. AnonChatGPT

Want a more privacy focused way to chat with ChatGPT? Just use AnonChatGPT. You still get the benefits of ChatGPT, but without anything being tied back to your account. There isn’t a premium version, so you’re limited to just the free models from ChatGPT.

To retain privacy, you also can’t upload any files. This is solely for chats.

10. iAsk

If you need factual answers from trusted sources, start with iAsk. It’s mainly for homework questions and study guides. While it’s a search engine for finding concise or detailed answers to various homework queries, it works with general questions as well.

For me, it seemed easier to target the correct sources. The only issue is sometimes the concise answers get just as wordy as ChatGPT.

11. Meta.AI

For anyone using Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other Meta platforms, Meta.AI is the built-in AI chatbot. You don’t have to use it, but it is free to ask questions, get recommendations, generate images, and more. It works similarly to ChatGPT, but fully integrated into Meta.

It’s currently ad-supported, though premium plans are likely coming soon. Use these tricks to keep your chats more private.

12. Grok

Prefer using X (formerly Twitter) over Facebook or Instagram? Then, make sure you’re using Grok. It’s X’s ChatGPT alternative that works within X to answer questions about posts, generate content, create images, and more.

Chatgpt Alternatives Grok

Its works well for interacting with real-time content, which ChatGPT doesn’t have access to. It usually has a more fun personality, but may not be the best at deeper research. But, if you’re using X, Grok is worth trying. Or, if you hate it, get it off your timeline.

More and more ChatGPT alternatives are popping up every day. Remember, when using any AI tool to write content, consider the ethics involved. In fact, AI writing can do more harm than good. If you’re worried about privacy when using AI models, consider switching to an offline alternative.
